Getting more carrier capacity cheaply:  Ryder, which rents trucks and trailers, allows others to set their own price and rent their idle equipment on a short-term basis using COOP.  Why cannibalize your own business?  Ryder has a much bigger fleet by leveraging vehicles it does not own.  See the example above.
