Many fires at sea are being caused by…
The cargo is causing many fires at sea – not the ship's operations. The Maersk Honam lost 25% of its crew to one such fire. Complex rules mean that labeling containers is both wrong and sometimes dangerous. A survey showed that about 55% of the 500 containers examined were potential fire hazards, and 69% had either improperly secured cargo or lacked labels on the cases. (No word on how the 500 containers were selected.) This growing issue highlights the urgent need for more standardized safety regulations and better oversight of shipping practices to prevent further tragic accidents.
