Immature Inbound Is Expensive

Managing inbound transportation has often been a mark of a mature supply chain organization. By making inbound transportation a profit center, landed costs go down. But simply managing transportation is not enough. Expert supply chains are now helping their buyers optimize their orders to fill trucks. We are seeing these expert supply chains saving 5-14% on transportation dollars, on single origin-destination shipments, as well as multiple pickup loads. And inventory isn’t being sacrificed. Waterway delays are becoming a more serious issue. Even with barge transportation volume (excluding coal) falling 1% a year over the last 13 years, the delays at locks have increased to nearly 2.5 hours. It used to be less than an hour.  Maybe the delays are driving the decline in volume. More must be done to ensure the viability of the barge option.
